SCAR CAMOUFLAGE

Scars on the face or body can leave us feeling uncomfortable, embarrassed and in some cases, make people shy away from the world.  Scar camouflage can make a huge difference to the appearance of a scar, and in some cases make them blend in so that they are less noticeable.

What is scar camouflage?

Through the technique of micropigmentation, custom blended pigments are carefully tattooed into the scar tissue or into the discolored area of the skin, so that the color of the damaged area, blends and matches the color of the skin surrounding it, making the scar as invisible as possible.

The texture of your scars may also be smoothed using micro-needling, which stimulates the body’s natural healing process, leaving scarring flatter and less visible.  Scar-camouflage is also known as skin tattooing or camouflage tattooing.

Does scar camouflage work?

Although micro needling and scar camouflage can reduce the appearance of your scar, it’s important to understand that these treatments won’t remove the scar, we are aiming to camouflage the scar into its surrounding tissue.

Each scar is also different.  The type of scar and its actual position on the body, the size, shape, colour, and even how deep the scar goes into the skin, are all factors that we need to consider.

Having said that, scar camouflage tattooing can be used on nearly any type of scar, including those from burns, surgery, vitiligo, and injury.  However, not every skin type is suitable.  Darker skin types have a risk of hyper or hypo pigmentation and are judged on each case whether suitable for treatment.

How do I know if my scarring is suitable for scar camouflage treatment?

For best results scars should be:

  • At least 1 year old
  • Not show any redness
  • Be paler than the surrounding skin
  • Not noticeably sunken

How long does scar camouflage last?

The results of a scar camouflage tattoo can last for several years, although touch-ups may be needed as the scar changes over time.

Things to expect from scar camouflage treatment.

The scar, depending on what part of the body it is on, may need a protective clear dressing applying for a period of up to seven days.

Mild discomfort and flaking may be experienced once the dressing is removed.

Expect a minimum of 3-4 treatments for each scar or area. With a gap between treatments of 4 to 6 weeks.

Results vary from each individual and the area may appear worse as it heals.
