Your basic face shape is a pretty handy thing to know. It can help you choose the most flattering glasses, hats, and of course, eyebrow shape. There are six basic shape categories that most of us should fit or lean into: oval, round, long, heart, diamond and square – and here’s how to find yours.
To start, pull your hair back from your face and look closely into a mirror. The proportion of your features will determine which face shape you fall under.
Oval Face Shape
Forehead is wider than the chin
Prominent cheekbones
Face gently tapers to a narrow chin
Best with: Softly angled brows. The face is already an oval shape, so we do not want to emphasise this more.
Round Face Shape
Face is almost as wide as it is long
Widest at the cheeks
Best with: A high arch. This helps draw the eye up and down and lengthens it. A rounded brow shape will just make the face appear rounder.
Long Face Shape
Forehead, cheekbones and jawlines are all about the same width
Face gradually tapers to a narrow oval chin
Best with: A flat, horizontal brow. This will makes the face appear shorter.
Square Face Shape
Forehead, cheekbones and jawlines are all about the same width
Square jawline is the most obvious feature
Best with: Balance it with a strong brow or soften it with curves. A sharp peak makes the brow appear more prominent, while curves soften stronger features.
Heart Face Shape
Similar to oval but the chin tapers to a point
Best with: Curves. A low rounded brow creates a natural look, while a highly arched brow can add length.
Diamond Face Shape
Not as common as other face shapes
Face is highly angular
Forehead is somewhat short
Face is widest at the temples.
Best with: Soft curves. Curves will both soften your look and make the widest portion of your face look less wide.
This is, of course, only a guide – personal choice and taste is vitally important, which is why at Helena Jones Aesthetics we always conduct an in-depth consultation before any treatment. Get in touch today for more information.
