A bit of lippy can work wonders. It can cheer us up, give us a boost of confidence and, in some cases, make us look and feel younger. Even if you haven’t got much time to put your makeup on, a coat of lipstick gives the face an instant lift with a dash of colour.

But constantly reapplying your lipstick can become a hassle. Even more so if you’ve lost colour and definition around your lips, relying on lipliner as well as lipstick to even them out.

If you’re nodding your head in agreement, a lip treatment may be the perfect solution for you. It’s also a great alternative to fillers if you want to create the illusion of fullness – without the risk of the dreaded trout pout or duck face!

All treatments begin with a consultation to determine what you’d like to achieve from the procedure, followed by an overview of what colours are available – from subtle, natural shades to bold and vibrant. It’s entirely your choice.

Lip treatments begin with the lip line, and where possible the pigment stays within your own natural contours. However, if required, the line can be extended outside the lip tissue to create more fullness or symmetry. Once the outline is complete, shading is added to the middle of the lips, leaving the inner area without colour to create the illusion of a thicker, more defined pout.

Topical anaesthetic can be used to minimise any discomfort during the treatment, but that is the most you should feel. Immediately after the treatment, you may experience some swelling or tenderness, but you’ll be given a gentle healing balm and aftercare instructions to help.

The colour of your lips will initially be quite striking. This is completely normal, and once fully healed the colour will reduce by about 40%, leaving you with naturally contoured, beautiful lips every day.

As with all treatments, this is a two-part process. You’ll need a retouch between 6–12 weeks after your initial appointment.

And you needn’t worry; you can still wear lipstick over the top of your newly tinted lips if you feel like a change. Perfect!

If you’re prone to cold sores, make sure you take medication to prevent them for at least 14 days prior to and after your lip treatment. The stimulation from the needle can bring out cold sores, which will prolong the healing process and limit pigment retention.
